Day 1

Saturday was a day full of traveling for our youth group. We left Central Church at 6:30 am, with about 5 hours by bus until we would stop for lunch at Rally’s in St. Louis, MO. When we were about an hour into the trip, we voted on a movie to watch. It was between Big Hero 6 (the winner) and Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark. Those next few hours consisted of sleep, card games, and sending weird Snap Chats. We also spent quite a bit of time looking forward to our next “mileage bag”, as our leader Joel called them, as well. Mileage bags are something we get every 100 miles during our journey. They normally contain a little snack like a granola bar or rice kipsies treat, or an activity that we can do. Yesterday we got a map of the US that we could mark off to keep track of our progress during the license plate game and a paper full of hints that could be deciphered into common idioms; both of these were turned into lively competitions with prizes awarded at the end.

As we were driving my friends and I discovered that Kansas is truly much flatter than other states, Tennessee especially so. The closer we got to Nashville, the more and more people began to act excited to get into the city, Katherine was probably the most vocal about her excitement. Once we finally arrived, we put our luggage in the hotel and ate dinner at Wendy’s across the street (at this time I would like to graciously thank the great people at both Rally’s and Wendy’s for their service to us crazy 30 teenagers. Sorry we bombarded you). After dinner, we decided to visit the Grand'Ol Opry Hotel for our site seeing of the night. The inside was truly stunning, with its rainforest-like foliage and waterfalls. There was so much to see and I don’t think we even saw it all. My group visited the multiple story waterfall, the amazing pools and large hot tub, and the center of it all with the American flag standing on top of the roof. I did not bring my camera as it would be so dark, but I’ll put a few of the pictures from my phone here.

When we all decided we were finished seeing the hotel, we met up and headed to the bus. Little did we realize that there was a show that just finished up across the street, therefore the traffic was horrible slow to leave the parking lot. The bus finally was offered a way into the line by a very nice family in a mini-van and we started back to our hotel. Everyone was pretty tired from our long car ride and long walk around the Grand'Ol Opry, so once we got to the hotel most people just took their showers and got ready for bed fairly quickly. All-in-all it was a good day to bond with friend son the bus and see a beautiful part of Nashville.
